On July 4, 1776, the U.S. declared independence from Great Britain. And each year on July 4, we celebrate the birth of American independence with fireworks, picnics, and family gatherings. This July fourth we can also celebrate the strength of U.S. Manufacturing.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) released its survey about June U.S. manufacturing production [2015] and the news is good. ISM said its index of national factory activity rose to 53.5 from 52.8 the month before, the highest level since January. The reading topped expectations of 53.1, according to a Reuters economists poll. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion in the manufacturing sector. Two straight months of increased activity point to U.S. factories beginning to adapt and overcome the struggles caused by a rise in the dollar’s value and cheaper oil prices, two trends since the fall of 2014.

In addition to the survey results this week a new report on the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) expects that the increase in Internet-connected devices over the next several years will also spark substantial growth in manufacturers’ service-related revenue. “Providing value-added services through connected products is going to be a primary source of revenue growth for manufacturing companies across many industries in the years to come,” said Heather Ashton, research manager for IDC Manufacturing Insights.
