Monitoring laundry with #AdafruitIO and #IFTTT #IoT

Unknown Reply 7:04 AM

While the chore of doing laundry has evolved from drying on a clothesline to using a machine and laundry-pods, the process still feels like it could be improved by adding more technology. [Zach Wendt and Jeremy S. Cook] agreed with this and built a laundry monitor to alert them of when to move the wet laundry into the dryer to prevent it from getting musty, and to avoid using more water to wash it again.

They used a ESP8266-based board and a vibration sensor to detect when the cycle starts (the machine is shaking) and when it stops (the machine stops shaking). To connect the sensor-enabled washing machine to the internet, they created a feed to log when the dryer starts and stops on io.adafruit.com and linked it to an If-This-Then-That applet to text them when the laundry machine is finished.
