Kathy Thornton and the First Hubble Servicing mission #SpaceSaturday
Way back in 1993, Kathy Thornton and other astronauts took a legendary spacewalk on the very first Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission. Here’s more from the Kennedy Space Center:
The first servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope launched December 2, 1993, aboard space shuttle Endeavour STS-61, three years after Hubble was deployed. Kathy Thornton was one of the astronauts who conducted an extravehicular activity (commonly known as a spacewalk) to work on servicing the space telescope. Hear her first-hand account of what it was like to hold one of the damaged solar arrays and to watch it float away into space as the sun began to rise over Earth.
